In some cases, these top STEM schools enroll over 50% Asian high school students, according to the U.S. News and World Report website on education ranking and student body. As each of these schools is a publicly funded charter or magnet school requiring an admittance process, it is important to note that many of these high school students are not necessarily American citizens.

In the same way foreign students come to the U.S. for higher education, many Asian families from foreign lands come to the U.S. on either H-1B work visas or Tourist visas and choose to live and/or work in close proximity to these STEM high schools to be in a better position to apply and gain admittance to U.S. universities later on. While in the U.S., their children are able to attend U.S. public, charter and magnet schools. America’s best STEM high schools, just like America’s best STEM universities, are providing education to many foreign children in addition to Americans.

According to a 2015 report from Stanford’s Center for Research on Education Outcomes, urban students who spent four years in a charter school learned about 50% more a year than demographically similar students in traditional public schools. Interestingly, for those charter schools that function as technology “magnet” schools, nearly 100% of those who graduate from the top U.S. STEM high schools listed above go on to college and promising, high salaried careers.
